THE ESSENTIAL MIX WITH SEB FONTAINE FROM IBIZA

Broadcast 01.08.99 : 02:00 - 04:00

Seb FontaineHow has Cream in Ibiza been this year?

It’s been amazing this year. Last week we had six thousand in and turned about two thousand away. It was the busiest night Cream has had in Ibiza in six years. It’s incredible because unlike some of the other clubs, Cream’s publicity has been really low-key. Its not like they have got flyers all over the place or anything like that. Some of the other clubs are really hammering the flyers so that everywhere you look you see logo after logo, but it’s not like that with Cream.

So what is their secret formula that is saving them all the flyers?

Well they’ve relied heavily on residents this year. Paul Van Dyk has been there most weeks; I’ve been there every week so it has been quite consistent. They have not been flying in various DJs every week and hoping it was going to happen that way, the clubbers have really responded to what the residents are playing.

How would you describe the music that is happening in Ibiza this year?

There’s a load of great stuff this year but it is a lot deeper than previous years. There hasn’t been one particular tune that sums up the vibe; it’s more like a bunch of tracks. Cream has not been about the big British tunes. Cream more than any of the other out here has been far less English in its way of thinking. It’s very much an Ibiza club this year.

How have you managed to do your UK gigs and make sure you get out there every week?

I’ve moved out here for the summer. I’m over here for eight weeks but I’ll be back in England for three weeks in August. I’m not a big fan of Ibiza in August.

Have you played anywhere else on the island this summer?

Yes, I played Manumission once and I’ve played Pacha for Sundissential but now I’m gonna spend the rest of the summer playing for Cream. I’m not playing for anyone else out here.

With just one gig a week you must have a fair bit of free time on your hands, what are you doing between gigs

Chilling. I’ve had my little boy over here so I’ve spent a lot of time with him in the pool and stuff like that. We’ve had loads of barbeques at the villa and gone out on boat trips and got absolutely arseholed a few times. I’ve been very chilled this year though there have been mad occasions. I had my birthday over here and it was mad. It lasted for three days. Tall Paul got the whole of Amnesia to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me. It was probably the only time in my life that I will have four and a half thousand people singing happy birthday to me.

So it’s been a bit of a holiday for you then

I wouldn’t say that. It is still quite hectic. I’ve been playing at BCM in Majorca as well so I’ve been flying over there quite a bit. I’ve flown home for a few weekends and had loads to do out here. I’ve had interviews to do with MTV and every radio station you can think of, not a day goes by without being pursued by someone for an interview.

And you do them all of course

No, I run and hide most of the time. When they do eventually catch me they all say "We’ve been trying to get hold of you for three days", and I ‘m like "Yep, I know you have". This is why I’ve bought a Spanish mobile you see, so that nobody knows my number. It’s not been all rest. I’ve spent a good few hours talking to press or flying around.

So are the passport people at the airport in Ibiza on first name terms with you?

Yes, they just nod at me now as I come through

Have you missed any flights yet?

I have yes. But I’ve only missed one this summer.

Was that on purpose?

It was yeah. I’ve had to look at a schedule and say "that’s inhuman to catch a flight at that time" and say to myself "f**k it". I know what I’m like and I know that I would get into such a grumpy mood. I hate going on planes without enough sleep. Its not that I am a bad traveller, I just have to get my sleep. I’ve never gone from a club straight to an airport, I don’t do that. I have missed flights by accident though; I don’t miss them all on purpose. I once turned up at a check in and the people behind the counter started laughing at me because I was twenty four hours late. Then when I booked a flight for the following day I turned up an hour late for that. Only last week I had a bit of a mad experience at the airport. When my flight returned on Sunday I caught a taxi from the airport to the villa only to find my hire car had been nicked. I started to panic, phoning people to tell them that my hire car had been nicked from outside the villa when all of a sudden it dawned on me. I had driven the car to the airport and left it there on Friday so that I didn’t have to catch a cab.

We all know about the reputation of the Brits abroad but are the British DJs behaving themselves out there?

No. Some are less well behaved than others while some are more discrete about their bad behaviour. Brandon Block and Alex P are certainly having fun and aren’t trying to hide it from anyone. But when I say they’re being badly behaved they are only having fun in a good way. They aren’t harming anyone.

Have you spotted any superstars out there yet?

No, not yet. Stan Collymore was out here a few weeks ago but he isn’t exactly a superstar anymore, is he.

Where do you go on the Island when you want to escape?

I just go back to the villa. The villa is wonderful; it’s a five bed roomed villa so we have lots of people over to stay. It’s really chilled. We sit here drinking until the sun comes up and class that as a night in really. People say "What did you do last night?" and we say "Oh, we just stayed in drinking until the sun comes up". What a top night "in" you can have in Ibiza.

Can you ever see yourself living out there?

I wouldn’t mind having my own place out here. My parents used to live here years ago. What has been cool is having my little boy here because it now means there have been three generations of Fontaine out in Ibiza.
